Belgard Construction in Ontario, CA | Toolbox Contractors
We install and service Belgard paver driveways, patios, and walkways across Ontario, with a focus on the city’s mid-century tract homes that sit on expansive clay. The single most important thing Ontario homeowners need to know before any Belgard job: if your original concrete driveway was poured directly on native soil, a paver overlay will almost certainly fail within a few seasons. That’s the problem we solve differently, and you can reach us at (855) 382-3257 for a free estimate.
Toolbox Contractors is an independent Belgard service provider offering our General Contractor in Ontario services, not affiliated with or authorized by Belgard. But we’ve installed Belgard Cambridge Cobble, Dublin Cobble, Urbana Stone, and Catalina Grana across Ontario’s 1950s-1970s tract neighborhoods and newer commercial projects long enough to know exactly how these systems behave in local soil. Call us at (855) 382-3257, and Norm Castellano will walk you through what your project actually needs.
Why Ontario Residents Choose Us for Belgard Service
Norm Castellano grew up in the Muscoy area just northwest of San Bernardino, where half the houses were always mid-project and the other half needed to be. He went through the construction technology program at San Bernardino Valley College, then spent the better part of two decades framing, roofing, and running full kitchen gut-and-rebuilds across the Inland Empire. These days he runs Toolbox Contractors with a tight crew he trusts, and he’s known for being the guy you call when a previous contractor left a mess that needs untangling before real work can start.
That background matters when you’re hiring for Belgard work in Ontario. We know the difference between a paver job that will survive this city’s clay and one that will heave in two years. We stock Belgard OEM pavers and matching accessories locally so turnaround stays short, and we specify aftermarket base materials and edge restraints that meet or exceed ASTM standards for expansive soil. One contractor, every phase – from the cabinets to the roof, and the driveway in between.
You can reach us the same way any local homeowner does: (855) 382-3257. We’ll come out, look at your existing slab, check the soil, and tell you straight what you’re working with.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Solve in Ontario
- Heaving and settling from expansive clay. The soil under much of Ontario’s older tract housing – especially in the 91761 and 91762 ZIP codes – is expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. If a Belgard driveway was installed without proper base compaction or with too thin an aggregate layer, pavers heave within a season or two. We tear out the compromised base, re-engineer it, and re-lay the pavers correctly.
- Efflorescence and UV fade on Cambridge Cobble driveways. Ontario’s summer sun is relentless – 100°F-plus days are routine – and unsealed Belgard pavers take UV damage that dulls color over time. Older Cambridge Cobble installations especially show white efflorescence residue from moisture wicking through the pavers. We clean, repair, and seal these surfaces to hold their color.
- Edge restraint failure and paver migration. Santa Ana winds and the thermal cycling of Ontario summers put real lateral stress on paver edges. When edge restraints are undersized or installed without proper spikes, pavers drift outward and gaps open up at the perimeter. We replace failed restraints and reset the pavers so the pattern locks back together.
- Porcelain paver cracking on old slab-on-grade patios. Many Ontario homes have original 1950s-1970s concrete patios that have shifted with the clay beneath them. Thin porcelain Belgard pavers bedded directly over a slab that’s already moving will crack, usually at the slab’s expansion joints. Proper installation means addressing the slab movement first – either grinding and leveling or, in some cases, removing it entirely.
- Driveway overlays failing on original concrete. This is the big one. Ontario’s postwar tract homes were built with concrete driveways poured directly over native clay, no engineered base. A paver overlay on top of that will telegraph every crack and heave from the slab below. We assess whether a full removal and re-engineered base is needed – and we’ll tell you honestly when it is.
Belgard Service in Ontario: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing about Ontario that a generic paver contractor won’t tell you, and why we offer Belgard repair in Montclair and surrounding areas: the city’s postwar housing boom produced thousands of homes with concrete driveways poured over expansive clay, no base material, no rebar, no structural reinforcement. The neighborhoods around 91761 and 91762 are full of them. When that clay gets wet in winter and bakes dry in a 105°F August, it moves. The concrete moves with it. And if you lay Belgard pavers on top of that moving slab – even with a sand setting bed – every crack and every heave in the old concrete will show through in the pavers within two or three seasons. It’s not a product failure. It’s a base failure.
That’s why we do a full removal and re-engineered base on most Ontario Belgard driveway projects, not an overlay. It costs more up front. But the alternative is paying twice: once for the overlay, then again to tear it out and do it right. In a 1950s tract near 91761, we tore out a cracked original concrete driveway that had heaved visibly from clay movement and installed a Belgard Cambridge Cobble driveway with a 6-inch compacted aggregate base and polymeric sand joints. The homeowner had a quote from another contractor for a thin overlay. We showed them how the clay movement would destroy it. That driveway has stayed flat through two full Ontario summers of 100°F-plus heat. That’s the difference between knowing the material and knowing the ground it sits on.
Belgard Models & Products We Service in Ontario
We install and repair the full range of Belgard concrete and porcelain paver lines common in Ontario, including Upland Belgard service coverage: Cambridge Cobble, Dublin Cobble, Urbana Stone, and Catalina Grana all hold up well in our climate when the base is right. For repairs and new installs, we use Belgard OEM pavers and matching accessories so existing patterns stay seamless. For base materials and edge restraints, we don’t default to the cheapest option – we specify quality aftermarket products that meet or exceed ASTM standards for expansive clay and high-UV exposure. We keep commonly needed pavers and accessories stocked locally so Ontario turnaround is measured in days, not weeks.
And we always assess whether existing Belgard pavers can be re-laid with fresh base rather than fully replaced. If the pavers themselves are still sound, the smart money is usually on re-laying, not buying new. Tell me what you’ve got and I’ll tell you what it actually needs.

AfterBelgard Service Pricing in Ontario
What you’ll pay for Belgard work in Ontario depends mostly on two things: how much of your old concrete has to come out, and how bad the clay is underneath. A straight overlay on a stable slab is the low end. Full concrete removal with a re-engineered base is the high end. We give written line-item quotes so you see exactly where your money goes, and our prices don’t change once the work starts unless you change the scope.
| Belgard Service | Typical Ontario Price Range |

| Paver Patio Installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Driveway Replacement | $5,000 – $14,000 |
Every estimate includes a site walk, a look at your existing slab and base, and an honest recommendation on whether overlay, re-lay, or full replacement is right for your Ontario property. Call (855) 382-3257 to schedule your free estimate – we’ll tell you what we see, not what we hope you’ll buy.

FAQs – Belgard Construction in Ontario
In most Ontario tract homes, yes. Concrete driveways from the 1950s through 1970s were typically poured directly over expansive clay with no engineered base. A paver overlay on that slab will crack and heave as the clay moves. Full removal and a properly compacted aggregate base is usually the only way to get a Belgard driveway that stays flat. Call (855) 382-3257 and we’ll assess your specific slab and soil.
It means we can’t cut corners on excavation or compaction. Expansive clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so the base has to be deep enough and compacted well enough to absorb that movement without transferring it to the pavers. We typically excavate deeper and add more aggregate than standard paver specs in Ontario because the clay demands it. For an exact plan for your property, call (855) 382-3257 – estimates are free.
Belgard concrete pavers are designed for high-UV climates and won’t crack from heat alone. Fading is most common on older unsealed driveways, especially Cambridge Cobble, where the sun has baked the factory color out over years. We can restore and seal aged pavers to slow future fading. Porcelain pavers are even more fade-resistant, but they need a stable base under them.
With a properly engineered base, 25 to 40 years is realistic for Belgard concrete pavers in Ontario. Pavers themselves rarely wear out – what fails first is usually the base or the edge restraint, which is why we put so much emphasis on getting those right the first time. If your pavers are shifting or cracking, call (855) 382-3257 to find out if it’s a re-lay or a full replacement.
It depends on the scope. Simple paver patio replacements at grade typically don’t need a permit in Ontario, but anything involving new drainage, retaining structures, or significant grade changes may require city review. We handle permit research for every job and pull what’s needed. Call (855) 382-3257 with your address and we’ll let you know what applies.
