Unilock Construction in Idyllwild, CA | Toolbox Contractors
We provide independent Unilock paver and wall installation, repair, and replacement across Idyllwild. What makes our work different up here: we build hardscape that holds up to Chapter 7A wildfire code, multi-foot snow loads, and freeze-thaw cycles at 5,500 feet, not flatland specs lifted from a Riverside strip-mall job. If you need a paver driveway, patio, or retaining wall done right for mountain conditions, call Norm and the crew at Toolbox Contractors: (855) 382-3257. We’re a full-scope general contractor working with Unilock products, not a manufacturer-authorized dealer, which means we give you straight answers about what these systems actually need on a mountain lot.
Why Idyllwild Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service
We’ve installed Unilock pavers and walls across the San Jacinto Mountains for years, including Unilock in Valle Vista. That matters because Idyllwild hardscape fails differently than flatland hardscape. Freeze-thaw heaving, snow-melt drainage, pine-needle debris, rocky subgrade, and WUI fire-hardening requirements all change how a paver base should be engineered and how a wall should be reinforced. Our crew reads Unilock’s spec sheets and Riverside County’s Chapter 7A requirements side by side, so the hardscape we build meets both. Norm Castellano grew up just off the mountain in Muscoy, learned construction through San Bernardino Valley College’s program, and spent two decades framing, roofing, and rebuilding homes across the Inland Empire before running Toolbox Contractors. He’s the guy you want when a previous contractor installed a paver driveway to flatland specs and the mountain ate it in two winters. Tell me what you’ve got and I’ll tell you what it actually needs.
We also bring something most hardscape-only crews don’t: full general-contractor scope. If your Unilock in Anza patio ties into a deck that’s rotting, or your paver driveway drains toward a foundation that’s settling, we handle the whole job under one contract. One team, one point of accountability, from the pavers to the roof.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Idyllwild
- Freeze-thaw heaving on Brussels Block driveways. We see this constantly in Idyllwild. The original base gets compacted to flatland specs, usually 4 to 6 inches of unwashed fill, and by the second winter the pavers are shifting and the edge restraint has lifted. Water gets under the pavers, freezes, expands, and the whole surface moves. Fixing it means full re-excavation and a properly engineered base, not just re-sanding the joints.
- Deicing-salt damage on Richcliff and Beacon Hill pavers. Salt tracked onto walks during snow season works into the paver surface and causes efflorescence and spalling, especially where polymeric sand wasn’t refreshed before the first freeze. The White efflorescence blooms look bad; the spalling is worse. We mitigate with proper joint maintenance and, where the damage is deep, selective paver replacement.
- Settlement and lean on Yorkville retaining walls. Steep, rocky lots are the norm up here, and a lot of original cabin cuts were never re-engineered for the load a wall actually carries. Without geogrid reinforcement or deep enough footings, Yorkville walls start leaning within a few seasons, especially after a wet spring. We rebuild with the right footing depth and grid layers for the grade.
- Moss and organic staining on shaded north-facing patios. Idyllwild’s pine canopy holds moisture, and Unilock’s textured paver faces hold it too. On north-facing patios that never get direct sun, joints stay damp and moss takes over. We correct drainage where we can and use maintenance-grade joint treatments, but the real fix is often re-grading so water doesn’t sit.
- Meltwater runoff undermining pavers against cabin foundations. Snow piles up against the house, then melts in spring and saturates the base next to the foundation. If the paver apron wasn’t graded to shed water away from the cabin’s pier-and-post footing, you get settlement exactly where you don’t want it. We re-grade and correct drainage as part of any paver replacement near the structure.
Unilock Service in Idyllwild: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing most hardscape contractors from the flatlands don’t understand about Idyllwild: the ground freezes here, and Riverside County’s winter grading limitations mean you can’t always get a paver base inspected and approved between November and the spring thaw. Idyllwild’s winter snow and spring melt push a lot of water against cabin-grade hardscape, and if your base isn’t in before the freeze, you’re deferring to spring whether you planned to or not. That scheduling reality doesn’t exist in Hemet or San Jacinto. We build our Idyllwild project timelines around it from the first site visit. On a sloped lot off Highway 243 near Fern Basin, we tore out a heaved Brussels Block driveway where the original base had been compacted to flatland specs and the edge restraint had lifted after two snow seasons — exactly the kind of Unilock repair in Idyllwild-Pine Cove we specialize in. The fix meant re-excavating to 12 inches, rebuilding the base with geotextile and crushed aggregate compacted in lifts, reinstalling the Brussels Block with Unilock edge restraints and polymeric joint sand, and grading the apron to shed meltwater away from the cabin’s pier-and-post foundation. The county signed off after a single inspection trip up the hill. That’s how it has to be done up here.
Unilock Models & Products We Service in Idyllwild
We work with the full Unilock paver and wall catalog, but the lines we install and service most in Idyllwild are Brussels Block, Beacon Hill, Richcliff, and Yorkville. For driveways, Brussels Block is the workhorse; Richcliff and Beacon Hill are popular for patios and walkways because of their larger-format look. Yorkville is our standard recommendation for retaining walls on mountain grades when we’re building new or rebuilding a failed wall. We use Unilock’s own edge restraints, joint sand, and wall caps because the system is engineered to work together. Mixing in generic aftermarket restraints on a freeze-thaw mountain site is where failures start. Our San Bernardino yard keeps common Unilock components staged so an Idyllwild job doesn’t stall waiting on materials to come up the hill.
Toolbox Contractors is an independent Unilock installer and service provider. We are not a manufacturer-authorized dealer and we don’t claim factory affiliation. That independence means we install and repair to what the site actually needs, not to a showroom sales script. For more on how we work with the brand, see our Unilock sales & service page.

AfterUnilock Service Pricing in Idyllwild
Mountain work costs more than flatland work for real reasons: every load of base material, every paver pallet, and every inspection has to come up Highway 243. That said, here’s what Unilock service in Palm Springs and Idyllwild typically runs.
| Service | Typical Range in Idyllwild |
|---|---|
| Paver Driveway Installation | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Paver Patio Installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Driveway Replacement | $5,000 – $14,000 |
What drives the spread: site access, slope, how much old base has to come out, whether we hit rock during excavation, and whether the county wants a WUI or drainage review. A free estimate from us includes a site visit, a look at your existing base or wall condition, and a written line-item scope. Call (855) 382-3257 to set one up.

FAQs – Unilock Construction in Idyllwild
Yes, but mostly at the edges. Hardscape near the structure has to support defensible-space requirements, so we don’t put vegetation beds, bark mulch, or combustible materials directly against paver edges near the house. Pavers themselves are noncombustible and work well in WUI zones. The bigger code driver on most Idyllwild Unilock jobs is actually drainage and grading, not Chapter 7A. Call (855) 382-3257 and we’ll tell you exactly what applies to your lot.
We schedule the base work to be completed and compacted before the first hard freeze, or we hold the job until spring. Riverside County’s winter grading limitations mean you can’t always get an inspection between November and the thaw, so we build our Idyllwild timelines around that window. The alternative, trying to compact frozen or saturated subgrade, is how you get the exact heaving problems we’re usually called in to fix.
Because the base was built to flatland spec. Shallow excavation depth, weak or uncompacted aggregate, and edge restraints that aren’t anchored for freeze-thaw cycles all contribute. Once water gets under the pavers and freezes, the surface moves. We re-excavate, build a proper base with geotextile and compacted lifts, and reinstall with Unilock’s own edge restraints and polymeric sand. For a repair-versus-replace assessment, call (855) 382-3257.
Sometimes, but not on any wall with real load behind it. On steep mountain grades, a Yorkville wall without geogrid reinforcement or a proper footing will lean within a few seasons. We’ve rebuilt enough of them to know. If your wall is under three feet and on stable ground, grid might be overkill. Above that, or with any slope loading, we’re putting grid in. An exact answer depends on your site, and estimates are free.
If the wall’s core is intact but caps and joint sand are shot, we rebuild the finish. If the base or footing has moved, we recommend full replacement rather than veneer repairs. Patching over a failed base just buys you one more season of the same problem. Call (855) 382-3257 for an exact quote on either path.
