Belgard Construction in Bonny Doon, CA | Toolbox Contractors
We’re Toolbox Contractors, an independent Belgard service provider working across Bonny Doon and the surrounding Santa Cruz Mountains. We install, repair, and rebuild Belgard paver driveways, patios, and retaining walls here. The difference in Bonny Doon is simple: nearly every hardscape project we touch sits on a steep, wooded parcel where wildfire defensibility rules and drainage engineering decide whether the job lasts five years or thirty. Call (855) 382-3257 and tell us what you’ve got and we’ll tell you what it actually needs.
Why Bonny Doon Residents Choose Us for Belgard Service
Most contractors in this area can lay pavers. Few have torn out failed Belgard installations on sloped, saturated lots, figured out why they failed, and rebuilt them to hold. Norm Castellano, our owner, spent his early years in the Muscoy area of San Bernardino watching half the houses on his street sit mid-project. That taught him what happens when work isn’t done right the first time. He went through the construction technology program at San Bernardino Valley College and spent the better part of two decades on framing, roofing, and full gut-and-rebuilds before starting Toolbox Contractors. When we show up in Bonny Doon, we’re looking at your pavers the way a guy who has untangled plenty of previous-contractor messes looks at a job: what’s actually wrong, what’s causing it, and what will stop it from coming back. We’re not authorized by Belgard, but we know their product lines and failure points because we’ve rebuilt enough of them here. See our Belgard sales & service page for the full scope of what we handle.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Solve in Bonny Doon
Here’s what we see over and over on Belgard hardscape in this part of the Santa Cruz Mountains:
- Base failure from saturated soils. Bonny Doon gets heavy winter rain and the occasional atmospheric-river storm. Water moves downhill through already saturated soils, washes fines out of poorly compacted bases, and pavers start heaving or settling. We see sunken sections, low spots that pond water, and joints that spread. The fix is rarely just re-setting pavers. It’s re-grading the base, adding drainage, and sometimes installing geogrid on steeper pitches.
- Ember damage during wildfire season. Dry, windy late summer puts every property on edge. Embers land in paver joints, against edges, and along the line where hardscape meets structure. On Belgard installations with weak edge restraints or organic debris built up in the joints, we find scorched units, cracked edges, and loose pavers that need replacing. You can’t fireproof a paver system, but you can engineer the joints, borders, and clearance zones to survive an ember event better.
- Edge restraint failure on sloped driveways. A lot of Bonny Doon driveways climb. Plastic edge restraints rated for flat residential use don’t hold on a 10-15% grade. Pavers migrate outward, joints widen, and the whole field starts drifting downhill. We replace plastic with concrete or aluminum restraint systems sized for the actual slope.
- Efflorescence and surface spalling. Coastal-influenced moisture works into lower-density Belgard units, especially on shaded north-facing lots where things stay wet. You get white mineral bloom, surface flaking, and ugly discoloration. Sometimes it’s cosmetic. Sometimes the unit has failed and needs replacement.
- Drainage problems from the original install. If the original paver layout didn’t slope away from the house or didn’t account for how water moves across a graded cut-and-fill lot, you get water pushing against foundations, retaining walls, and paver edges. We rework the base plane to move water where it belongs.
Belgard Service in Bonny Doon: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing about Bonny Doon that changes how Belgard work has to go: the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fire burned through this area, and a lot of the paver work we do now sits on post-CZU rebuilds. Those parcels are often nonconforming. The original driveway and patio footprint may be grandfathered in, but only if the new hardscape meets current WUI ember-resistant and drainage standards. That means a new Belgard paver layout on a burned-over lot can’t just be a like-for-like replacement. It has to be engineered to the old site plan and today’s fire code at the same time. Drainage planes have to move water away from rebuilt structures on slopes that may have lost root structure and soil stability. Ember-resistant borders and noncombustible gravel lines along the structure become part of the design. Contractors who don’t work Bonny Doon regularly don’t think about this. We do, because we’ve sat through the re-permitting conversations with the county on these exact lots.
Belgard Models & Products We Service in Bonny Doon
We work with Belgard Urbana Pavers, Catalina Slabs, Weston Wall, and Dublin Cobble most often in Bonny Doon, largely because these are the lines that show up on custom mountain homes and post-fire rebuilds. For replacements, we use Belgard OEM pavers to keep color and dimensional match tight. But we’ll specify an upgraded aftermarket geotextile or a better polymeric sand when the OEM material won’t perform under Bonny Doon’s drainage demands. We stock common replacement units locally where we can and order the rest direct so turnaround stays short on Belgard repair in Felton and nearby. If the base is sound, we repair. If the base is undermined or the lot burned over, we’ll tell you a full rebuild is the honest call and price it accordingly. We’re a full-scope contractor, so if the paver project turns out to need a retaining wall, drainage work, or a landing pad for an ADU, the same crew handles it.

AfterBelgard Service Pricing in Bonny Doon
Belgard hardscape pricing in Bonny Doon runs higher than flatland Santa Cruz County because material deliveries, slope work, and WUI compliance all add labor and logistics. Here’s where our typical projects land:
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Paver Driveway Installation | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Paver Patio Installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Driveway Replacement | $5,000 – $14,000 |
What drives the cost on your property: how steep the site is, whether the base needs a full re-grade, whether we’re matching existing Belgard units, and what WUI defensible-space work the county requires. Our free estimate walks the site with you and gives a written line-item scope. Call (855) 382-3257 to set one up.

FAQs – Belgard Construction in Bonny Doon
Sometimes, yes. If the pavers survived with no structural cracking and the base is still sound, we can lift, clean, and re-set them. If the heat warped the units or the base is undermined by post-fire erosion, reusing them means inheriting the old problem. We’ll tell you straight which situation you have.
WUI code requires noncombustible zones around structures, which usually means a gravel border or hardscape transition at the building line, plus paver joints that don’t collect pine needles and other ember fuel. Your paver design has to accommodate that from the start. If it doesn’t, you’ll be redoing the perimeter after inspection. Call (855) 382-3257 and we’ll walk the property before you commit to a layout.
Water. Saturated soils on graded lots lose bearing strength, the base washes out from under the pavers, and the field settles or shifts downhill. The fix is a properly compacted, thicker aggregate base with drainage consideration, not more sand under the pavers.
Often, yes. Retaining walls over a certain height and hardscape that changes drainage patterns usually trigger county review, especially on nonconforming post-CZU lots. We handle the permit process as part of the scope, because we’d rather have the paperwork right than have you sitting on an unpermitted wall when you go to sell, whether it’s here or Belgard in Pasatiempo.
We’ve worked off Empire Grade Road and plenty of other spots where a full concrete truck isn’t making the turn. We break deliveries into smaller loads, stage material at the road, and run it in with smaller equipment for Belgard in Ben Lomond and similar mountain sites. It adds cost and time, but it’s the only way to do the job without tearing up your access road. We factor it into the estimate up front.
