Unilock Construction in Lake Arrowhead, CA | Toolbox Contractors

We install and repair Unilock pavers, driveways, patios, and retaining walls across Lake Arrowhead and surrounding communities, including Crestline Unilock service. The difference with us comes down to this: most flatland paver crews don’t know what a 5,000-foot freeze-thaw cycle does to a base, and most mountain contractors don’t know Unilock’s product lines well enough to spec the right unit for the right slope. We know both. Norm Castellano runs our crew, and he grew up around San Bernardino, learning construction at San Bernardino Valley College before spending two decades on framing, roofing, and hardscape across the Inland Empire and up into the San Bernardino Mountains. We work as an independent Unilock contractor, not an authorized dealer, so the advice you get is ours, not a manufacturer’s sales pitch. Call (855) 382-3257 to schedule a free estimate.

Why Lake Arrowhead Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service

Lake Arrowhead is not a place where you guess at base depth. The housing stock here runs from 1920s lakefront cabins to 1970s second homes, most of them on graded slopes with pier-and-post foundations and decks that have seen real winters. When a homeowner calls about a heaving paver driveway or a retaining wall that’s starting to lean, the problem is almost never the paver itself. It’s what’s underneath. We approach every Unilock project here by looking at drainage first, slope second, and pavers third. That sequence is why our work holds up.

Norm’s crew also handles full-scope general contracting, which matters more than people expect on a hillside job. A paver driveway on a Lake Arrowhead lot often ties into a retaining wall, a drainage swale, or a deck rebuild. One contractor who understands all of it beats coordinating three separate trades who’ve never met. Tell me what you’ve got and I’ll tell you what it actually needs. That’s how Norm puts it, and it’s the reason we don’t show up with a one-size-fits-all quote.

We also work with Unilock sales & service across the broader San Bernardino County region, so we see how these installations perform at different elevations and soil conditions. That comparative experience helps us predict what a Lake Arrowhead winter will do to a specific Unilock unit before we install it, not after.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Lake Arrowhead

  • Freeze-thaw heaving on paver driveways. Lake Arrowhead winters cycle between snow, melt, and refreeze dozens of times per season. When a paver base wasn’t excavated deep enough or the drainage wasn’t engineered for slope runoff, the joints open up, edges ride up, and the driveway looks wavy by March. We rebuild the base properly and re-lay the Unilock units so they stay flat.
  • Efflorescence and surface spalling on shaded hillside patios. Ice-melt salt, repeated wet-dry cycling, and long stretches of shade on north-facing Lake Arrowhead lots can leave a white chalky film on concrete pavers, and in worse cases, flaking or pitting. We clean what’s cleanable and replace what’s spalled beyond repair, then adjust the drainage so water doesn’t sit on the surface.
  • Estate Wall-type retaining walls bulging or leaning. When a segmental retaining wall goes in on a steep cut slope without enough geogrid reinforcement or drainage aggregate, the freeze-thaw pressure plus groundwater push the face outward. We see this regularly on hillside lots off Rim of the World Highway. The fix usually involves rebuilding the wall section with proper tie-backs and a drainage column behind it.
  • Polymeric joint sand washing out on graded lots. Lake Arrowhead’s terrain means surface water moves fast. If a paver patio or walkway wasn’t graded to redirect water, runoff sheets across the surface and erodes the joints. Edges then start to sink, and weeds move in. We regrade, re-sand with Unilock’s specified polymeric sand, and in many cases add a French drain or surface channel to keep water off the pavers entirely.
  • Paver edges sinking where the base wasn’t compacted properly. On steep lots, the outer edge of a driveway or patio takes the most load. If the base aggregate wasn’t compacted in lifts or the edge restraint wasn’t installed, the outside rows drop within a few freeze cycles. We lift the affected area, re-compact, and set a proper edge so the whole field stays locked together.

Unilock Service in Lake Arrowhead: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Here’s something specific to Lake Arrowhead that flatland paver pages never address: on many hillside lots here, you cannot get a concrete truck to the pour. The access is a winding two-lane road like Highway 173, then a steep driveway with a tight turn, then a graded pad that drops off on one side. A concrete truck won’t make it, and even if it did, the chute can’t reach the back of the house. That reality makes Unilock pavers the practical choice for driveways and patios on a huge number of Lake Arrowhead lots. Pavers go in one pallet at a time, carried or conveyor-fed to the work area.

But that advantage only works if the base is engineered for what this elevation does to it. A shallow base on a Lake Arrowhead slope will heave by the second winter. We spec deeper excavation, geotextile separation fabric, and compacted aggregate in lifts, then we design the surface drainage so snowmelt and rain water don’t undermine the system. On a steep lot off Highway 173, we rebuilt a heaving Unilock Brussels Block driveway where the original base was too shallow for the freeze-thaw cycle and water was sheeting toward the cabin. We excavated to proper depth, set geotextile and compacted aggregate, re-graded for drainage, and re-laid the Brussels Block with Unilock polymeric sand. The pavers have held through two winters since.

This is also where Norm’s broader construction background matters. We’ve rebuilt decks, reinforced foundations, and re-graded drainage on Lake Arrowhead properties. When we lay pavers here, we’re thinking about how the whole hillside drains, not just how the patio looks from the back door.

Unilock Models & Products We Service in Lake Arrowhead

We install and repair the Unilock lines that get used most in mountain applications: Brussels Block, Beacon Hill, Brussels Dimensional Stone, and Estate Wall. Each has a different profile and use. Brussels Block works well for driveways where you want a classic tumbled look and a system that can take vehicle load when the base is right. Beacon Hill reads more formal and gets used often on patios and walkways around second homes and vacation rentals. Estate Wall is our go-to segmental retaining wall unit for cut slopes, though the wall is only as good as the geogrid and drainage behind it.

We use genuine Unilock units, caps, and their specified polymeric sand where color match and warranty coverage matter. For base, drainage, and geotextile materials, we spec quality aftermarket products that meet or exceed the engineering requirement. That mix keeps your project honest: the visible surface is genuine Unilock, and the invisible structure underneath is whatever performs best on a Lake Arrowhead slope. We’re an independent contractor, not authorized by Unilock, so our recommendations don’t get filtered through a manufacturer’s sales program.

Unilock Service Pricing in Lake Arrowhead

Mountain bids run higher than flatland bids, and Lake Arrowhead is no exception. Hauling materials up Rim of the World Highway, hand-carrying pavers to a hillside patio, and excavating deeper bases for freeze-thaw resistance all add labor hours. Here’s what our Unilock work typically costs in the Lake Arrowhead market:

Project Price Range
Paver Driveway Installation $7,000 – $18,000
Paver Patio Installation $3,500 – $11,000
Driveway Replacement $5,000 – $14,000

What drives the spread is access, slope, and what’s underneath. A flat, easy-access patio at the front of a vacation rental costs less than a steep rear patio where every pallet gets hand-carried and the drainage requires a retaining wall. A free estimate from us includes a site visit, a look at your drainage, and a written line-item quote, not a vague number scribbled on a card. Call (855) 382-3257 and we’ll get you real numbers.
