Unilock Construction in Palo Alto, CA | Toolbox Contractors

We’re an independent Unilock installer serving Palo Alto with paver driveways, patios, and retaining walls built to handle the city’s specific zoning and drainage realities. The short version: if you’re planning Unilock hardscape on a Palo Alto lot, the design review process and lot coverage limits shape the project more than anything else, and we’ve navigated those rules on projects across Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow, and the Eichler tracts. We use genuine Unilock components and know which products hold up on slab foundations and clay soil here. Call (855) 382-3257 for a free estimate on Unilock work in Palo Alto.

Why Palo Alto Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service

Most contractors in Palo Alto know pavers. Few know Unilock’s specific product lines the way we do, and fewer still understand how a Brussels Block driveway behaves on an Eichler lot versus a Beacon Hill Flagstone patio near Stanford. Norm Castellano runs our crew, and he’s the kind of Palo Alto General Contractor who will walk a job, point at a base issue, and tell you exactly what it needs before anything gets ordered. Tell me what you’ve got and I’ll tell you what it actually needs. That directness saves Palo Alto homeowners real money on Unilock projects.

We’re Unilock sales & service specialists in the sense that we install these systems week in and week out. We stock Unilock edge restraint, geotextile fabric, and polymeric sand specifically because Palo Alto’s clay soils and winter rains demand them. Every job gets a written line-item quote before work starts, and we pull permits when the city requires them.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Palo Alto

  • Efflorescence on Brussels Block and Cambridge pavers. Palo Alto’s dry-season irrigation cycles are rough on pavers when the base wasn’t drained properly. The white chalky residue appears, and it’s almost always a drainage problem underneath, not a paver defect. We excavate, fix the base, and clean the surface so it stays clean.
  • Beacon Hill Flagstone spalling over expansive clay. Older Eichler lots in south Palo Alto sit on clay that swells and shrinks with moisture. Without a geotextile separator between the soil and the base, Beacon Hill Flagstone can spall and flake at the surface. We see this all the time and fix it by rebuilding the base properly.
  • U-Cara wall settlement in tight side yards. Small R-1 lots mean walls get squeezed into narrow side yards with poor drainage. If water pools behind a U-Cara wall, the base softens and the wall shifts. We address the drainage first, then reset the wall with proper aggregate and drainage fabric.
  • ArmorTec joint sand loss and edge chipping. Winter rains expose weak edge restraint fast. Cambridge pavingstones with ArmorTec are tough, but the joints need polymer sand and the edges need solid restraint. If that’s missing, you’ll see sand washout and chipped edges within two seasons.
  • Sunken paver areas over old trench lines. Palo Alto’s 1950s and 60s homes often have aging utility trenches that were backfilled poorly. Pavers installed over them sink within a year or two. We over-excavate and compact in lifts so the base doesn’t settle again.

Unilock Service in Palo Alto: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Palo Alto’s R-1 zoning and design-review process is the single biggest factor most homeowners don’t anticipate. The city scrutinizes front-yard hardscape for lot coverage and daylight-plane compliance, and on many projects, engineers require permeable pavers or specific stormwater details that add design time and cost. A driveway or patio that would sail through permitting in neighboring cities can hit months of review in Palo Alto. That’s not a reason to avoid Unilock; it’s a reason to plan the design around the rules from day one rather than discovering them after the pavers arrive on site.

In Greenmeadow, we replaced a cracked concrete driveway with Unilock Brussels Block pavers for a 1960s Eichler ranch, and the city’s design review initially flagged the increased impervious surface. We worked with the homeowner to incorporate a permeable joint system and adjusted the slope to direct runoff away from the slab foundation, ultimately getting approval and a driveway that handles winter rains without ponding. That project taught us exactly how Palo Alto’s review culture works, and we apply that lesson to every Unilock job here.

Unilock Models & Products We Service in Palo Alto

We install and repair the full Unilock lineup that matters for Palo Alto homes: Brussels Block for traditional driveways and walkways, Beacon Hill Flagstone for a more natural flagstone look, Cambridge Pavingstones with ArmorTec for high-traffic areas and a tighter surface, and the U-Cara Wall System for retaining and freestanding walls. For installations, we use Unilock OEM components and accessories to maintain system integrity. For repairs, we’re happy to recommend high-quality aftermarket joint sand and polymeric sand where compatible, and we’ll always tell you honestly if a repair makes more sense than a full replacement.

Unilock Service Pricing in Palo Alto

Palo Alto Unilock pricing sits at the upper end of regional ranges because of the design-review process, the clay soil prep, and the higher cost of hauling materials into the city. Here’s what we typically see:

Unilock Service Typical Palo Alto Range
Paver Driveway Installation $7,000 – $18,000
Paver Patio Installation $3,500 – $11,000

What drives the cost: lot access, soil condition, whether the city requires permeable systems, and the Unilock product line you choose. Our free estimate includes a walkthrough, measurements, and a written scope so you know the number before anything gets ordered. Call (855) 382-3257 for a quote on your Palo Alto project.
